LINDA S. GUNN, illustrator

Artist, illustrator, author

An established artist of thirty plus years, Linda was taught to draw at an early age by her Disney Artist grandfather, George Drake (hired by Walt Disney in 1929 to hire and train new artists for the fledgling Disney Studio). Linda, an avid reader of illustrated books, became encouraged toward painting by the works of the famous illustrators Howard Pyle, NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Arthur Rackham, and later by the paintings of Andrew Wyeth. At the age of ten, she was given John Gnagy's Art Studio in a Box. It contained instructional books with supplies for drawing, oil and watercolor painting. She also had several opportunities to visit the works of her favorite artists through visits to the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the Barnsdale Park Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Linda's drawing skills were perfected through years of life drawing classes at Long Beach City College, where she studied watercolor under the professional eye of Mike Daniel (from 1981-1992).

A fully illustrated Word Wings chapter book

REVIEWS:

5 STAR Review

Bushed?! All in the Woods... written by J.R. Poulter and illustrated by Linda Gunn tells the story of Pete who has just moved to the countryside in the area where his Granddad used to live. The author, J.R. Poulter, has written a delightful story accompanied by beautiful illustrations which really bring the story to life. Not only is this a fun read, but it’s about tolerance and understanding of older people, respect for the past, and above all, respect for one another. Mrs. Allan, the neighbour, is quite annoying with her comments and insinuating opinion[s]. The ending is really satisfying when it all comes together and it is Mrs. Allan who ends up looking silly. All in all, a lovely book that a young reader could tackle alone, but would also be ideal to discuss with a parent or carer. Jane Finch, Author, layer, Readers' Favorite reviewer

CBCA, Reading Time REVIEW:

This large format illustrated story is enjoyable & entertaining. Well written. LD, Reading Time, p.21, No. 4 Nov. 2012

A story on making snap judgements based on appearances, learning to keep an open mind & heart; beautifully written, heart-warming, will appeal to children & adults alike. Magdalena Ball, compulsivereader.com

REVIEW by former CBCA judge

Unusual format, most attractive, the printing is large & clear, easy for early readers to tackle alone. Quite charming, dealing with adult themes seen through a child's eyes in a way uncommon in books for the young; works well, very evocative; beautiful production, themes touching cross-generational communication & conservation. Dr. V. Lowe, CBCA judge, Create a Kid’s Book

With sensitive and humorous prose, J.R. Poulter tells a story of family life, love, and acceptance with beautiful illustrations by Linda Gunn... Perfect for young readers, this book speaks of a boy and his grandpa, a mother defending her son from gossip, and the surprise of love at any age. THEMES: problem-solving, temptation, risk taking, rules, family relationships, mulberries, obedience, humour, extended family, action and reaction, choices, grandparents, senior citizens, respect for elders
